Serenity, Clarity, Productivity & Sustainability

Picture yourself hiking through a forest, or walking along a beach. How do you feel? The sunlight is peering through the trees as you walk on uneven ground grabbing onto a tree or a moss covered rock, all while breathing in the scent of pine or eucalyptus. Or maybe you’re bare feet feeling the sand in between your toes as the water rushes over the shore and the wind blows through your hair. Doesn’t this feel amazing? I mean, why would we not incorporate this feeling into our homes or workspaces? This is “Biophilic Design”.
What propelled this design style?
With climate change on everyone’s mind this movement has erupted incorporating natural elements in such a way that doesn’t seem manufactured. For short, Biophilic Design is an interior space that connects us with nature. The thought process behind the design is that by bringing nature indoors it will reduce stress and recuperate our well being making us more productive and clear of mind.
How do I achieve Biophilic Design?
Consider these 5 elements
AIR, LIGHT, MIND, COMFORT & NOURISHMENT
Consumers still want to have a fabulous home without the harsh chemicals. Do you have a large window that lets in natural light, or even better, looks out into nature? If so, than you’re already half way there!
Plants
The most obvious element to introduce is plants. Plants and water promote a clean home that is environmentally friendly. Adding one plant in each room of your home – on the coffee table or dining table, can make a small impact. If you wanted to make a large impact you could integrate a living wall complete with a water feature. Additionally, light fixtures that incorporate plants are becoming quite the trend as well, primarly featured in restaurants.
Natural Materials & Colours
Tactile textures like a jute area rug, linen fabrics, shades of blue and green, and botanical patterns that evoke nature’s beauty will bring the outdoors in. Other elements like natural stone are mixed into these designs, which can be achieved through accessories, countertops, furniture and even lighting.
Natural Light
Adequate natural light in your home is crucial to this design aesthetic. Skylights, large windows and mirrors that are strategicslly placed will allow optimal natural light into your home. This can also be achieved by a sunroom, outdoor deck and/or balcony.
*Insider tip - create a cross breeze with window placement to incorporate airflow and mimic an outdoor breeze.
Wood
The most natural and warm element. Incorporating this material could be reached by simply introducing a coffee table created from wood. Flooring, cabinetry, feature walls, wood slat walls, ceiling beams and much more are also ways to use wood in your space.
Smell
Incorporate a scent diffuser in your home or workspace. Certain smells can be calming, energizing or even comforting for the mind, body and soul. The more elements you add into your space, the more relaxed and focused you will be.
