The Evolution of Range Hoods

When designing a new kitchen we assess every inch of the room for the best appliance locations. A functional floor plan for working and preparing meals is the most important decision to consider but lets not forget the aesthetic perspective. One major appliance that has become a feature in the kitchen is the range hood.

What is the purpose of a range hood?

Range hoods are the ventilation system installed above cooktops or ranges; they remove smoke, steam, odours, grease, and other airborne pollutants that are produced during cooking. Additionally, they improve indoor air quality - helping to keep your kitchen cleaner.

Many years back the range hood used be the appliance that was either forgotten or hung above your cooktop or range, seen only from a functional perspective. It was typically stainless steel either with modern lines or even with a microwave combination. Yes, they were indeed functional but not characteristically attractive. With the increasing popularity of the kitchen becoming the centre of the home and the need to feel more like a piece of furniture rather than an industrial cooking space, the desire for built-in range hoods is on the rise. Built-in range hoods provide a beautiful custom enclosure for that “not so pretty” stainless steel appliance. These enclosures allow the appliance to tuck inside and only been seen from underneath which gives you versatility and allows for a unique personality feature within your kitchen. They offer a customized look to match your kitchen's style, with features like cabinetry panels that cover the hood for a completely integrated appearance, plaster structures or even uniquely shaped designs.

Main types of range hoods

1.    Built-In Range Hoods: A built-in range hood is integrated directly into cabinetry or a wall, providing a seamless and streamlined look in your kitchen. Unlike more traditional range hoods that are installed externally, a built-in range hood is hidden or partially concealed within the structure of the kitchen, offering both functional and aesthetic benefits

2.    Wall-Mounted Range Hoods: These are installed on the wall above your stove. They can be stylish and often have a modern or industrial look.

3.    Under-Cabinet Range Hoods: These range hoods are mounted underneath your cabinets, which makes them less noticeable. They work well if you have limited space and want a more subtle design; however opting for a built-in range hood would be more aesthetically pleasing.

4.    Island Range Hoods: These are mounted

from the ceiling above an island cooktop. They often have a more stylish and contemporary design, with a focus on aesthetics and performance. However, it is imperative to consider the size of your kitchen and how visually heavy these may feel in your space.

5.    Downdraft Range Hoods: These hoods are built into the counter or cooktop and pull the air downwards, rather than upwards. They are the perfect choice for an island installation where a traditional hood would be too bulky or impractical.

So how do you choose the right range hood?

You will want to consider factors like the size and style of your kitchen, the type of cooking you do, and the level of noise you're comfortable with. Which range hood design would you choose?
